Celebrating the success

Credit union celebrates success – but there’s more to do

People came from across the county and beyond to celebrate the success of the West Sussex Credit Union at Chichester’s Assembly Rooms last Friday (23rd July).

The audience heard from Jo Clarke about the work that is being done by the Illegal Money Lending Team to root out loan sharks that prey on local communities and charge extortionate rates of interest. Anyone who is lending for profit without an official licence is trading illegally and the team want to hear about it.

Frances Borrer, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Legal and General also spoke about the support they are providing to the credit union to develop professional marketing using the latest techniques, and credit union director Jenny King said that the credit union, which was launched in October 2008 is nearing 1,000 members and has already made loans worth £250,000 and collected £165,000 in savings from individual members.

Many of these loans have been made to people who would otherwise have borrowed from home credit companies, which charge at least 272% APR. By borrowing from the credit union around £200,000 in saved interest payments has stayed in the West Sussex economy – supporting local shops, business and jobs.

West Sussex Credit Union is at the forefront of the new drive to provide community finance for people who want to save their money in an ethical, local and friendly organisation and for people who want to borrow at affordable rates – many of whom are finding the banks difficult to deal with.

The credit union is planning to move to new larger premises in Montague Street, Worthing in the autumn to accommodate its six staff and many volunteers, and to provide a better service to customers. Their ambitious aim is to have 8,500 members by 2014 with a loan book worth £2.25 million.

Street survey highlights dangers of borrowing from loan sharks

During the recent Pevensey week of action in Bognor Regis, the Safer Arun Partnership, in conjunction with Trading Standards ‘Stop Loan Sharks’ campaign and the West Sussex Credit Union carried out a street survey to highlight the dangers of borrowing from unlicensed people, make people aware of better options if they are having money difficulties and gain a greater understanding of the social and economical issues that residents are having to deal with locally.
